Air Grading Course

Prerequisite

Before you can embark on your first flying stage, you'll have to go through Basic Military Training (BMT) and also ensure that you qualify for Officer Cadet School (OCS). So, please do well for your computerized test, IPPT, SIT test and peer appraisal. You'll receive a call from RSAF to arrange a date during your block leave after BMT to sign the contract if you meet the requirements.

AGC

This will be the first "obstacle" on your path to being a pilot and it'll take place at a lovely place called Tamworth, Australia. It'll be the best part of your pilot life as the lodging is awesome (spacious room with personal toilet, 3 buffet style meals daily), but do note the 3g in Australia base is generally not that good. The squadron there follows a 5 day work week and everyday will roughly have 3 waves of 4 flights each so that amount to 12 flights per day. Now, the crucial part regarding flights. Having a total of 15 sorties, 1-6 are lessons, 7 is pre-test and 8 is test and the cycle repeats till 15.Going into details is going to be a long list so I'll list what you need to do by the 15th flight. You'll have to:

  • Taxi the plane.
  • Handle all radio transmission (Don't be nervous!)
  • Handle all the checks (This can be prepared in advance by studying the notes)
  • Take off without assistance (Toes clear!)
  • Climb & descend (Trim as required)
  • Maintain straight & level flight (Power + Attitude = Performance)
  • Medium level turns
  • Steep turns (Don't forget to adjust back your power after exiting a steep turn)
  • Climbing & descending turns (Maintain required speed)
  • Stalling:

Standard (Heavy buffeting)Incipient (Light buffeting)Final Approach (Procedures similar to Taking Off)

  • Aerobatics:

WingoverLoopRoll Off TopBarrel Roll

  • Glide Circuit (Make a decision by the respective height, doesn't matter if you make it or don't)
  • Normal Circuit (Don't be afraid to use throttle as required)
  • Landing (Don't pull too much and enter a climb)

It may seem overwhelming at this point of time but its relatively easy to catch unto as long as you prepare for each flight in advance. Having said that, studying the notes will only give you 20-30% of passing chance, what matters more is to mental fly properly. Do not mental fly with the perfect scenario, try and give yourself some problems such as being too high too fast or too low too slow!
